I have the honour to report as follows:-
During my stay at Chu-tat-shan the steam cutter patrolled the river each night, and I also visited most of the villages on the river during the day. Everything appears to be quiet, and I am informed by the Captains of the steam launches on the river that no piracy has taken place in this district since January last. When at XXXXXX Samshui I saw many of the Captains of the steam launches, but could get no information from them.
I also saw H..Consul, Mr Little. As the last piracies have taken place in Sailam Channel I have now XXXXXXXXX proceeded there, and propose patrolling this district during the next few days.
The number of Chinese Government launches seems to
have been much increased during the last week, and there
are now a good number of these boats patrolling both this channel and at Chu-tag-shan. The number of soldiers has apparently also been increased. I saw four military stations today which have been formed since this ship passed up ten days ago, and the number of soldiers who have passed up and down the river yesterday and today in steam launches. junks, &c., is remarkable. All these men have been armed with a rifle and two bandoliers of cartridges.
I have, &c.,
